Membrane Switch

Membrane switches serve as critical human-machine interface (HMI) units, allowing operators to interact and communicate seamlessly with equipment, instruments and industrial machinery.

As a type of printed electronic circuit, a membrane switch functions by pressure actuation to open and close circuit pathways. Its internal circuitry is commonly screen-printed with silver or carbon-based conductive inks.

Together with touch screens and mechanical switches, membrane switches fall into the category of professional user interface and human-machine interface (HMI) solutions.

Membrane Switch Construction

A standard membrane switch assembly is structured with 6 to 7 core functional layers, detailed as follows:

Graphic Overlay

Graphic overlays are mostly made of polyester material, which outperforms polycarbonate in chemical resistance and bending fatigue life. We support digital printing, screen printing, or a combined printing process to precisely match custom requirements for color, texture and surface finish for your membrane switch design.

Overlay Adhesive Layer

This adhesive layer securely laminates the graphic overlay to the upper circuit layer. Acrylic adhesive is widely adopted here for its outstanding durability and stable adhesion performance even in humid and harsh working environments.

Top Circuit Layer

Made of heat-stabilized polyester with a thickness of 0.005″–0.007″, this layer is printed with silver conductive ink and dielectric ink. It can be integrated with metal domes or polydomes to deliver tactile feedback, optimizing overall operation experience and usability.

Circuit Spacer Layer

Positioned between the top and bottom circuit layers, the double-sided adhesive polyester spacer keeps the circuit normally open until key pressure is applied. It effectively insulates and separates the upper and lower circuits to avoid accidental conduction.

Lower Circuit Layer

Identical in material and thickness (0.005″–0.007″ heat-stabilized polyester) to the top circuit layer, it is printed with silver conductive ink and dielectric ink. It extends into a flexible tail for reliable connection to control PCBs and other electronic components.

Rear Adhesive Layer

This bottom adhesive layer is used to attach the whole membrane switch assembly to device enclosures, housings or rigid mounting panels. We can customize adhesive grade and thickness to perfectly fit your equipment mounting needs.

Rigid Support Layer

As an optional structural layer, it enhances the overall rigidity and stability of the membrane switch. Available materials include aluminum, FR-4, steel and more. It can also be fitted with mounting studs, standoffs and other fasteners for easy installation.
